The first recollection Joyce and I have of both Tom and Barb was during a “quick” coffee break we took with Monte and Rinda Larson and Tom and Barb in Miles City. Joyce knew Barb from before but we had not known them as a couple.
It was readily apparent that we were meant to be friends since we began harassing each other from the very beginning. As I remember it, we often had coffee together on Saturday mornings and that lead to what we refer to as “Friday Nighters” at local eating establishments. It was usually a tough decision as to where we were going to eat-not if we were going to eat out, mind you, just where.
The six of us became fast friends and Joyce and I really looked forward to our time with the “gang”. Occasionally we were joined by another couple-Donna and John Smith. That added greatly to our fun since Donna was the life of the party.
One event came to be a yearly feast-that being the steak and lobster feed at our home. We would have up to 12 people at the feed with Monte cooking the steaks and me barbecuing the lobster. Joyce prepared the lobster in lemon juice and butter and they were delicious. We even had a couple from Billings come to join us one year.
Upon “retirement” it became more than just a Saturday coffee “meeting” and it continues to this day, albeit without the Larson’s since they have moved to California. Tom is busy with his “part-time job” collecting government checks and Ken spends his time substitute teaching and being in Helena with the state legislature. Some day we all will retire and the coffee time may become a daily occurrence. I, for one, would true enjoy that opportunity.
Here’s to some of the best people-and friends-we know TOM AND BARB ALBERS.
